Port O'Connor Shark Fishing Adventure

Looking for a fishing trip that'll get your heart pounding? You've found it. Port O'Connor's waters are home to some of the most aggressive sharks on the Texas coast, and we're talking about the kind of fish that'll test every bit of drag on your reel. This 5-hour charter puts you right in the middle of prime shark territory, where bull sharks and blacktips patrol the flats and deeper channels looking for their next meal. We keep groups small at just 4 anglers max, so everyone gets plenty of shots at these apex predators without fighting for rod time or space at the rail.

What to Expect on the Water

We launch out of Port O'Connor and head straight to where the sharks are feeding. The beauty of fishing these Texas waters is the variety - one minute you're working the shallow flats where blacktips cruise in packs, the next you're anchored over structure where big bulls hang out waiting to ambush anything that swims by. The action can be non-stop when conditions align, especially during those prime feeding windows early morning and late afternoon. Don't expect to sit around waiting - when sharks are active in POC, they're really active. We'll move around to different spots based on what's happening that day, reading the water and following the bite. The gulf side offers different opportunities than the back bay areas, and we know exactly where to position the boat for each species we're targeting.

Shark Fishing Techniques

Shark fishing isn't just about throwing big baits and hoping for the best - though we definitely use some serious tackle to handle these fish. We run heavy conventional reels spooled with braided line and circle hooks that give us the best hookup ratios while keeping the sharks healthy for release. Fresh bait makes all the difference, and we'll either bring what we need or catch it on the way to the fishing grounds. Cut mullet, jack crevalle, and hardhead catfish all work great, but the key is presentation and placement. We'll set up a spread of baits at different depths and distances from the boat, creating a scent trail that draws sharks in from a wide area. The real skill comes in reading the signs - bird activity, bait schools, water color changes - all tell us where to set up for the best success.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Bull sharks are the heavyweight champions of Port O'Connor waters, and for good reason. These thick-bodied predators can push 8 feet and 200+ pounds in our area, with the power to strip line off your reel faster than you'd believe possible. Bulls are year-round residents here, but they're most active during warmer months when baitfish are abundant. What makes them so exciting to catch isn't just their size - it's their attitude. Bulls don't give up easy, making multiple runs and using their bulk to try and break you off on structure. They're also incredibly unpredictable, sometimes following baits right to the boat before deciding to eat, other times hitting so hard and fast you barely have time to get the rod out of the holder.

Blacktip sharks bring a completely different energy to the fight. These sleek, fast-moving sharks are known for their aerial displays - jumping clear out of the water multiple times during the battle. Blacktips typically run 3 to 5 feet in our waters, but what they lack in bulk they make up for in speed and agility. They show up in good numbers during their spring and fall migrations, often traveling in schools that can provide non-stop action when you find them. The best part about blacktips is their willingness to bite - they're aggressive feeders that'll hit a variety of baits. When you hook into a school of feeding blacktips, you better be ready because everyone on the boat is about to get very busy very quickly.

Time to Book Your Spot

Port O'Connor's shark fishing is as good as it gets on the Texas coast, but the best trips fill up fast during peak season. This 5-hour charter gives you serious time to work different areas and techniques without feeling rushed, and with only 4 spots available, you're guaranteed personalized attention and plenty of opportunities to get on the fish. Whether you're a seasoned angler looking to tangle with some real muscle or someone wanting to experience what big game fishing is all about, this trip delivers the goods. The sharks are here year-round, the guides know where to find them, and the only thing missing is you with a bent rod in your hands. Book your shark fishing adventure today and get ready to find out why Port O'Connor has earned its reputation as one of the top shark destinations in Texas.

Blacktip Shark

Blacktips are the athletes of the shark family - sleek, fast, and known for their spectacular jumps when hooked. These 4-6 foot sharks cruise our shallow waters and artificial reefs, usually in 30-100 feet. They're social feeders that travel in groups, making for exciting action when you find a school. Spring through fall offers the best fishing as they follow baitfish migrations along our coast. What guests love most is their acrobatic fight - blacktips will leap clear out of the water multiple times, spinning and twisting. They're also less intimidating than bigger sharks, perfect for first-time shark anglers. My go-to technique is chumming with ground mackerel to draw them up, then switching to live sardines on circle hooks. The oil from sardines really triggers their feeding response.

Bull Shark

Bull sharks are the bruisers of the shark world - thick, powerful fish that average 8-10 feet and pack serious attitude. What makes them special around Port O'Connor is their ability to move between salt and fresh water, so you'll find them in shallow bays, river mouths, and nearshore waters. They're aggressive feeders year-round, but summer months bring the best action when water temps climb. These sharks put up one hell of a fight - they don't give up easy and will test your tackle to the limit. The key to landing bulls is using fresh eel when you can get it. The high oil content drives them crazy, and the tough skin stays on your hook through their initial runs. Cut mullet works too, but eel is pure magic for these aggressive predators.
