Reel in the Action: POC Flats Fishing

Hey there, angler! Ready to hit the flats of Port O'Connor for some light tackle action? We're talking about a 5-hour charter that'll have you casting for some of the Gulf's most prized inshore species. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting your feet wet, our guides know exactly where the fish are biting. So grab your hat and sunscreen, 'cause we're about to get into some serious fish-catching business!

What's the Deal on the Water?

Picture this: you're gliding across crystal-clear shallows, sight-casting to tailing redfish, or feeling the thump of a black drum taking your bait. That's what awaits you on our Port O'Connor flats trip. We're not just fishing; we're hunting with hooks in some of the most productive waters in Texas. Our seasoned guides will put you on the fish using both live and dead baits, maximizing your chances of landing that trophy catch. And with a max of 4 guests per trip, you'll get the personal attention needed to up your game or learn the ropes if you're new to this style of fishing.

Skinny Water Tactics

Alright, let's talk strategy. Flats fishing is all about finesse and reading the water. We'll be using light tackle setups that'll make even a modest-sized fish feel like a monster. You might find yourself tossing soft plastics along grass lines for reds, or maybe we'll set up a tasty crab bait for those big uglies (that's black drum to you newcomers). Our guides are pros at spotting fish movement and knowing just how to present your bait. We might even break out the fly rods if conditions are right and you're up for it. It's not just about catching fish; it's about the thrill of the hunt in these shallow playgrounds.

Fish on the Menu

Black Drum: These bruisers are the bulldogs of the flats. They can grow to over 30 pounds, and when they're tailing in the shallows, it's a sight to behold. Black drum love crustaceans, so we often use crab or shrimp to entice them. They're most active in the cooler months, but you can catch them year-round. The fight of a big black drum in shallow water is something you won't forget!

Sheepshead: Don't let their goofy grin fool you; these striped bandits are crafty and delicious. Sheepshead are structure-oriented, so we'll target them around jetties, pilings, and oyster reefs. They have a knack for stealing bait, so when you hook one, it's as satisfying as solving a puzzle. Spring is prime time for sheepshead, but fall can be productive too.

Redfish: Ah, the crown jewel of Texas flats fishing. Redfish, or red drum, are why many anglers come to Port O'Connor. These copper-colored beauties can be found tailing in super shallow water, giving you heart-pounding sight-fishing opportunities. They'll take artificial lures, but there's nothing like watching a red crush a live shrimp under a popping cork. Fall is fantastic for reds, but they're a year-round target that never disappoints.

Crevalle Jack: Hold onto your rod! Crevalle jacks are the speedsters of the flats. These powerful fish will test your drag and your stamina. We typically encounter them in the warmer months, often busting bait on the surface. Throwing a topwater lure into a school of feeding jacks is about as exciting as fishing gets. They're not known for their table fare, but for pure sport, jacks are hard to beat.

Time to Wet a Line

Listen, the flats are calling, and the fish are waiting. Our 5-hour trip is the perfect slice of Port O'Connor fishing action. You'll get to experience the thrill of sight-casting, the fight of hard-pulling inshore species, and the satisfaction of learning new techniques from our top-notch guides. Whether you're looking to bend a rod with your buddies or introduce the kids to the joy of fishing, this trip fits the bill. Don't let another season slip by without getting out on these legendary Texas waters. Give us a call, book your spot, and let's make some fishing memories that'll have you coming back for more. The bite is on, so what are you waiting for? Let's go fishing!

Black Drum

Crevalle Jack are true bruisers of the flats. These golden-sided fish usually run 3-5 pounds but can reach a whopping 60 pounds. You'll find them in seagrass beds, over sand flats, and around oil rigs - anywhere there's bait to chase. They're notorious bullies, muscling other fish out of the way to get to food. Watch for birds diving on baitfish - that's often a sign Jacks are pushing prey to the surface. These guys put up one heck of a fight on light tackle. To land one, cast a silver spoon or topwater plug beyond the school and retrieve it fast. Jacks love the chase, so keep that lure moving. My best tip? Listen for a watermelon smell. Sounds crazy, but anglers swear you can smell it when Jacks are feeding hard. Spring through fall is prime time to tangle with these powerhouses.

Black Drum

Crevalle Jack

Black Drum are the heavyweights of our bays. Most run 5-30 pounds, but the big uglies can top 90 pounds. You'll find them in brackish water over oyster reefs and mudflats. They use those powerful jaws and teeth to crush shellfish - you can actually hear them crunching sometimes. Spring's the best time to target them when they school up to spawn. Anglers love the challenge of landing these bruisers. Use heavy tackle and fresh crab or cut bait on the bottom. Here's a pro tip: if you're after good eating, stick to the smaller ones under 15 pounds. The big ones get tough and lose flavor. When a big one takes your bait, hang on tight - they'll test your gear and your back!

Crevalle Jack

Redfish

Sheepshead are the toothy troublemakers of our waters. Most run 1-8 pounds, but the real monsters can hit 20 pounds. Look for their distinctive black and white stripes around docks, jetties, and oyster beds. They're notorious bait stealers with those human-like chompers. Spring's prime time when they gather to spawn. Anglers love the challenge - you've got to finesse these guys. Use light tackle and small hooks baited with fiddler crabs or pieces of shrimp. My best advice? When you feel the lightest tap, set the hook hard. Their tough scales and spines make them a pain to clean, but the sweet white meat is worth the effort. It's some of the best eating fish in the Gulf.

Redfish

Sheepshead

Redfish are the rockstars of our flats. Most run 20-30 inches, but the big boys can hit 45 inches and 50 pounds. Look for their copper-colored backs and signature black tail spot in 1-4 feet of water. They love hanging around oyster reefs, grass flats, and muddy bottoms. Fall's the best time to target them when they school up to spawn. Reds will crush topwater lures, but live shrimp is hard to beat. These fish put up a stubborn fight and taste great on the grill - that's why anglers can't get enough. Here's a local trick: on calm days, look for their tails sticking up as they root for crabs in the shallows. Ease up quietly and make a cast just beyond them for an exciting sight-fishing opportunity.
